The cake is made with milk, sugar and flour, and the whole process takes up to four hours.
Wal-Mart is known for its love of cake and has a long history of making them.
The company was founded in 1946 by Sam Walton and his son JB.
Its stock rose by more than 20% in 2017 as its annual profits soared.
But as the holiday season is rapidly approaching, some are worried about the quality of the product.
“The cake is not made with a process that is known to be reliable,” Al Jazeera’s James Reynolds said.
“The process is the same across the whole supply chain, so the cake is likely to be a total fraud.”
“The product is not really a cake at all,” he said.
Many shoppers say the cake has a sweet smell, and has been linked to obesity.
However, Dr David Spiegel, an expert in nutrition and food science at Oxford University, says the quality and taste of the cake are more important.
“A good cake, the taste is very important, it’s the texture of the skin, it affects how the mouth feels, the way you feel when you eat it,” he told Al Jazeera.
In 2016, Wal-Marts began to use a new cake recipe that uses a cake-like dough to make the cake, instead of the traditional wheat flour.
The company has previously said that the new recipe is much better, but said the new method was not the same as its original recipe.
Wal-Marks has previously claimed that the cost of its new cake, which is also used in the company’s bakery products, was lower than the cost to make traditional versions.
Al Jazeera’s Maryn McKenna, reporting from the UK, said that it was not clear whether Wal-mart was the only company using a similar cake recipe, and she also asked whether the company had changed its cake recipe in the last two years.
“They have said that there is no evidence that their cake is fake, but it does mean that it could be,” McKenna said.
Walmart did not respond to Al Jazeera in time for publication.
